At Northwest Bifolds we offer you market leading bifolding doors from Origin, Schuco and Frameless Glass Curtains. The Origin and Schuco doors offer similar methods of opening however our frameless bifolding doors you’ll find open differently. Our experience tells us there is no best method as each has its own benefits to the homeowner.
How do bifolding doors open?
Generally, there are two different options for how bifolding doors slide and fold. These comprise the standard hinge and fold arrangement or the pivoting and folding door.
Our Origin and Schuco bifolding doors utilise the more traditional arrangement. Here the weight of the doors is all at the bottom where you’ll find the rollers, the carriage and the running gear.
All doors of this type open in a zig zag pattern as they’re being folded back. The doors will slide along the top and bottom track folding together as they do so.
Where folding doors are provided with an access leaf, this is a hinged leaf that swings independently. Some access leaves are on the one side of the doors and do not fold at all, others are connected to the folding leaves and slide back with them.
Sliding and Pivoting Doors
Our frameless bifolding doors use the pivot and fold arrangement. With these doors, each individual door leaf or panel slides along and can then hinge outwards or inwards when it reaches the end of the door. All the doors operate in this way and then stack together.
The obvious visible difference between these two types of opening arrangements is that on the traditional door you’ll see door hinges. On the slide and pivoting door there are none. Look closely at the Origin or Schuco bifolding doors and you’ll see all the leaves are connected by folding hinges. On the frameless glass curtains it is the gearing at the top and bottom of the doors that enables them to swing open.
What is the better opening arrangement for bifolding doors.
At North West Bifolds, we sell both types of bifolding doors to give our customers choice. There is no good or back method as each door is visually different and therefore operationally different. It could be argued that the physical operation of our frameless doors is greater as each leaf needs to be opened individually. But in reality this is no real effort for the user.
The slide and pivoting arrangement of our frameless bifolding doors does mean that the door stack tighter when open than a conventional bifolding door. If this is more desirable for you then we recommend our frameless doors.
Another advantage of our frameless bifolding doors is that you can move each panel along as you wish to create ventilation openings. Each panel can slide along as you wish and you can choose which doors remain in situ and which ones fold open.
